The largest glacial lake in Slovenia is not only an incredibly beautiful tourist trap, Lake Bohinj also has an enviable population of Lake Trout, which is mainly caught from boats. besides very common residents, Brown Trout and Grayling, the lake’s depths are home to burbot, while its shores offer us the Perch. Other autochthonous lake species include Eelpout and an impressive number of 9 species of Bleak. A true lakeside fishing paradise.

Your fishing adventure begins in the early morning hours. Together with our local guide, you will visit the spots that most certainly hold fish, as the lake is so big that you won’t be able to fish on every promising spot. Amongst your targeted species will be the Lake Trout, Brown Trout and the elusive Grayling. You will be given a few breaks for food and refreshments and admire this beautiful Alpine environment. The fishing trip can last all day or half a day, depending on your preference.

Fish

As Slovenia’s most widespread Trout species, the Brown Trout can be caught at sizes ranging from 25 (min. size) to 50 cm. It’s mainly found in upper and middle reaches of rivers and streams, Karst waters being home to the largest. This wonderful fish’s colour patterns can vary between dark grey, copper-red, olive green, or yellow-brown, sprinkled with red, white and black spots. The Brown Trout is a beauty that can be found in most popular fishing spots around Slovenia. The fishing season runs from March to November.

Season: March 1st – September 30th

The Grayling is one of Europe’s most popular fly-fishing species, which has seen quite a steep decline in population around the continent. But do not threat, this fish is well-preserved in Slovenia’s waters. Although an increasing number of 50 cm Grayling have been reported in recent years, the minimum size catch measures 45 cm. Characterised by their colourful dorsal fin, Grayling prefer to swim in calmer sections of rivers and fishing with the use of an artificial fly makes it a perfect catch throughout the mid-May to end of October season.

Season: Ordinary Grayling: April 1st – November 30th (Soča river April 1st – November 30th)
Adriatic Grayling: May 16th – November 30th
Slovenian record: 63 cm

The Catfish is the largest freshwater fish in Slovenia. Its home is in calm, deep waters, and prefers a slightly more contaminated environment. It can grow up to 3 m in length and weigh over a staggering 100 kg. The average length of Catfish caught in Slovenian waters is around 1 m. A 95 kg (209 lbs), 255 cm long trophy-size Catfish was caught in Lake Slivnica, while the most common Catfish areas are in the lower Sava River, Lake Bled and other slower flowing rivers. Fishermen use techniques of spinning, fishing with float and ground fishing.

Season: July 1st – April 30th
Slovenian record: 266cm, 99kg (218lbs) and 237 cm, 115kg (253 lbs)

Žiga

I graduated in forestry engineering, but fishing has been a passion of mine since I was 3 years old when my dad first took me fishing. I enjoy all types of fishing techniques, but for the past 20 years I have focused mainly on fly fishing and spin fishing. Nymphing is still my favourite. I’ve gained my experience while fishing on practically every Slovenian river and lake. I’m fluent in English and German.
