Slovenian Lakes

There are 1300 lakes in Slovenia, divided into the high-mountain, lowland, natural and artificial categories. The largest are the glacial wonders of Lake Bohinj and Lake Bled. These are the pride and joy of Slovenia’s Alps and are extremely popular tourist destinations. Besides being exceptionally attractive in every way, both lakes are also home to an enviable number of fish. Among many other fishing treasures, Lake Bohinj’s depths hide the Char and Burbo, while enormous Carp can be caught in Lake Bled. However, the current record-holder for the biggest Carp ever caught in Slovenian waters is Šmartinsko Lake, the largest of all artificial lakes in the country. Another popular destination for avid fisherman and hikers alike is the stunning Lake Jasna. This pocket-sized gem is known for its white sandy shores and the awesome Wels Catfish, among other fantastic freshwater species. Then there is nature’s wonderful magician called Lake Cerknica. This disappearing lake is one of the largest intermittent lakes in Europe. Besides its picturesque surroundings, Lake Cerknica’s main attractions are Carp and Pike.
