Description
After the Sava Bohinjka and Sava Dolinka confluence, the river gets the name Sava. Its gravel beds, deep pools and sharp passages are perfect if you’re looking for a wilder fishing experience. It flows through the town of Kranj, where the largest Huchen was caught. In and around Lake Trboje many other species can be fished, like the Chub, Barbel, Perch, Zander, and Carp. Brown trout, Rainbow trout and Grayling are also very common in this river.
Your fishing adventure starts in the morning when you and your guide will travel to the best fishing locations on the Sava River. Fishing will take place throughout the day, with breaks for snacks and refreshments. At the end of a successful day, the fisherman or fisherwoman with the biggest catch pays a round of drinks to toast to the new Huchen King.
Fish
The Grayling is one of Europe’s most popular fly-fishing species, which has seen quite a steep decline in population around the continent. But do not threat, this fish is well-preserved in Slovenia’s waters. Although an increasing number of 50 cm Grayling have been reported in recent years, the minimum size catch measures 45 cm. Characterised by their colourful dorsal fin, Grayling prefer to swim in calmer sections of rivers and fishing with the use of an artificial fly makes it a perfect catch throughout the mid-May to end of October season.
Season: Ordinary Grayling: April 1st – November 30th (Soča river April 1st – November 30th)
Adriatic Grayling: May 16th – November 30th
Slovenian record: 63 cm
As Slovenia’s most widespread Trout species, the Brown Trout can be caught at sizes ranging from 25 (min. size) to 50 cm. It’s mainly found in upper and middle reaches of rivers and streams, Karst waters being home to the largest. This wonderful fish’s colour patterns can vary between dark grey, copper-red, olive green, or yellow-brown, sprinkled with red, white and black spots. The Brown Trout is a beauty that can be found in most popular fishing spots around Slovenia. The fishing season runs from March to November.
Season: March 1st – September 30th
Sharing many of Slovenia’s waters with the Brown Trout is the gorgeous Rainbow Trout. It’s an incredibly adaptable fish and can be found in both manmade and natural habitats – flowing or standing. Thanks to its Rainbow-coloured flank and tiny black dots, this Trout is easily distinguishable from other fish. It can reach a size of 90 cm and weigh up to 10 kg, with the average fishing size between 26 (min. size) and 50 cm. The Rainbow Trout is much braver and more aggressive than its Marble and brown counterparts, which makes its powerful flight tough but very enjoyable. You can catch this creature from the end of March until the end of October.
Season: March 1st – November 30th (Soča river April 1st – November 30th)
Fishing guides
I started fishing at the age of 6. I spent most of my young age fishing on lakes, but when I discovered fly fishing, it instantly became my biggest passion. I’ve been fly fishing for more than 20 years now and during that time I have fished most of Slovenia’s rivers. I am a member of many fishing clubs and a competitor in the National Championship for 3 years now. My favourite rivers for fly fishing are Soča, Idrijca, Savinja and Tolminka. I am also a big enthusiast of fly tying.
I graduated in forestry engineering, but fishing has been a passion of mine since I was 3 years old when my dad first took me fishing. I enjoy all types of fishing techniques, but for the past 20 years I have focused mainly on fly fishing and spin fishing. Nymphing is still my favourite. I’ve gained my experience while fishing on practically every Slovenian river and lake. I’m fluent in English and German.
