Sava

Before merging into one, there are two Sava rivers in Slovenia – the Sava Dolinka and Sava Bohinjka.

Sava Bohinjka springs from Lake Bohinj, Slovenia’s largest natural lake. Besides being home to all Grayling varieties, the brown and Rainbow Trout, the Sava Bohinjka is fantastic for catching Huchen. An occasional Chub is also known to drift from the lake downstream. Most of Sava Bohinjka is easily accessible and its alternating cascades, pools and sandbanks are a fly-fisherman’s dream.

Sava Dolinka, emerges to the surface near the Slovenia-Italian border. The river is lush with Trout and Grayling can be spotting swimming further downstream. The Moste reservoir is where fish tend to grow, with giant Rainbow Trout having been caught in its waters.

After the Sava Bohinjka and Sava Dolinka confluence, the river gets the name Sava. Its gravel beds, deep pools and sharp passages are perfect if you’re looking for a wilder fishing experience. It flows through the town of Kranj, where the largest Huchen (127 cm, 24.8 kg) was caught. In and around Lake Trboje many other species can be fished, like the Chub, Barbel, perch, zander, and Carp.
